Slavoj Zizek - The Big Other's Role
In Lacanian psychoanalysis, the big Other is a big deal. All worldviews (or "symbolisations," as Jacques Lacan called them) reach a deadlock in their understanding of how the world works. This creates the Real- the mental object constituting all which goes beyond what we can understand an object being. This needs to be patched with the big Other, as Zizek explains, and has several more well-known names- God, the End of the World, the Singularity, Nirvana, and many others.
